For the love of shawls, tupperware, spoiling my niece…. and AI

Baby, say it with me: “Ma… Ma… Ma-chine Learning!”

Behold! Another celebrity was born on December 27th, and she will be called Amariah (/ah-’mah-ra-yah/) Bethel. Uncle said they will call her Bethel, but I insist on calling her Aya. Besides the hair, Aya and Hayley have another thing in common: their birthday!

The Birthday Paradox tells us that there are probably more people in the hospital who share the same birthday with Aya. In the semi-private ward where my aunt stayed after giving birth, there were four patients lying in beds with their families. There were about 16 people on average in each ward. The whole floor seemed to be allocated for pregnant women and those who have just given birth. There were about 10 wards along that corridor, so my guess would be that a total of 40 wards were on that floor, i.e. about 600 people were on that floor at the same time we were. Plug that in the formula for Birthday Paradox, we get a 100% chance of finding people, on the 3rd floor, born on the same day as Aya. The probability drops to 28% when we try to look for a match in the same ward.

probability of a match for any number of people n

Statistics, combinations and permutations are vital parts of the century’s buzzword: Artificial Intelligence. In an attempt to #startthemyoung, we showed Aya one of the applications of AI in modern tech — facial recognition as used in filters!

bbgirl, the future is bright… the future is AI

Too bad Aya and I can’t proceed with our Machine Learning 101 (they’re moving out as soon as Aya gets discharged). Maybe Atty is interested in AI too?
